-
- I don't want to go too far afield from the original topic of
- discussion, and I have little background on the specifics of this
- debate, but the above statement is utterly false.
-
- Public domain means just that: owned by the PUBLIC. Any work placed
- into the public domain MAY NOT be copyrighted. Derivative works
- may be, but the public domain portion remains in the public domain.
-
- For example, many old movies are in the public domain. Ted Turner
- has taken many of these, colorized them, and distributed the
- colorized versions. These colorized versions are copyrighted by
- Turner (Communications?), but the original films are not.
-
- In the case of public domain software, any or all of it may be
- included an another program or set of programs. It may be left
- intact, or butchered beyond recognition. It may be distributed as
- part of a 'free' package, or as a commercial product. Remember,
- however, that while the product, and any enhancements or modifications
- to the public domain code may by copyrighted, the public domain
- code itself may not.
-
- To be fair, reputable authors (those with a shred of integrity)
- should at least feel inclined to offer credit to the authors of
- any public domain routines used in their product. If nothing else,
- this encourages the continuation of programming efforts in the
- public domain.
-
- By the way, the correct word is 'copyrighted', not 'copywritten',
- which carries a completely different meaning.
-
- Regards,
- Chris
