- TOOL BUILDING WITH ECMA PCTE
- A Tutorial on Tool Building for PCTE
-
- Presented by Software Design & Analysis, Inc.and INSTEP, Inc.
-
- 10-11 November 1992
- Santa Clara Marriott, Santa Clara, California
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- The PCTE (Portable Common Tool Environment) interface defines a set
- of services to facilitate the construction of CASE tools and soft-
- ware engineering environments. The services have been designed to
- be scalable, independent of the language in which the tools are
- written, evolvable, and implementable on local area networks.
-
- The European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) accepted the
- PCTE interface definition in December as ECMA Standard 149. C and
- Ada language bindings of the interface have subsequently also been
- accepted as ECMA standards.
-
- The PCTE interface is gaining widespread acceptance within the
- platform, CASE tool, and software development environment com-
- munities.
-
- The PCTE interface includes object management services that support
- data definition and management for a software engineering environ-
- ment. Tool builders and environment builders use these services
- when designing tools and constructing environments.
-
- INTENDED AUDIENCE
-
- This two day program is intended for people who are building PCTE-
- based tools and/or environments. While ECMA PCTE provides many
- services for constructing tools and environments, there are many
- decisions a tool/environment builder must make regarding the ef-
- fective use of PCTE services. This course is designed to provide
- attendees with an understanding of how to use the basic services of
- PCTE to construct and integrate tools and environments. The
- tutorial assumes some level of familiarity with PCTE concepts.
-
- OUTLINE
-
- I. Introduction
-
- An introduction to the tool building method, including an
- identification of the actors in tool and environment
- building.
-
- II. ECMA PCTE Review
-
- A brief review of the ECMA PCTE facilities that are relevant
- to tool building.
-
- III. Key Issues of PCTE Tool Building
-
- Discussion of the principal choices and factors affecting the
- design of tools for PCTE-based environments.
-
- IV. PCTE Schema Design
-
- An overview of a method for the design of data models, their
- representation in PCTE schemas, and the documentation and
- validation of these schemas.
-
- V. Building a PCTE-based Environment
-
- Discussion of the environment architectures that distinguish
- the framework from common services and tools; support mecha-
- nisms for data control, user interface and process integra-
- tion; and the nature of the agreements that they make
- possible.
-
- VI. Assembling a PCTE-based Environment
-
- Discussion of the selection of a PCTE-based environment,
- the strategies for assembling the environment from existing
- and new components including encapsulation, description and
- evaluation of components.
-
- VII. Design of PCTE Tools and Toolsets
-
- Discussion of strategies for the migration of existing tools
- to PCTE, including porting, recompiling, exploiting PCTE and
- re-engineering; tool architectures, installation character-
- istics and delivery for PCTE tools; good use of the PCTE
- services by tools; and explicit identification of the depen-
- dencies between a tool and its environment.
-
- VIII. Other Issues of PCTE Tool Building
-
- Discussion of topics such as hybrid environments (including
- PCTE and non-PCTE based tools, for example) and the influence
- of this analysis on PCTE implementers.
-
- IX. Questions and Answers
-
- Open question and answer period.
-
- REGISTRATION
-
- Registration is limited to provide high quality educational
- experience. Registration information and forms follow.
-
- SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE....
-
- Ian Thomas works on environment framework and integration projects
- at Software Design & Analysis, Inc. His previous work at Hewlett-
- Packard's Software Engineering Systems Division and Bull's Corp-
- orate Research Center involved a number of projects that built in-
- tegrated tool sets on the PCTE interfaces. His current technical
- activities emphasize environment frameworks, environment integra-
- tion technology, software process support, and software engineering
- database issues.
-
- Christian Bremeau also works on environment framework and integra-
- tion projects at Software Design and Analysis, Inc. During his pre-
- vious work at GIE Emeraude, he was a member of the PCTE+ design team
- and one of the architects of the Emeraude implementation of PCTE+.
- More recently, he has been guiding the Ada bindings for PCTE
- through the ECMA standardization process. His technical activities
- involve environment framework design and the use of framework
- technology in the construction of environments.
-
- Brian Nejmeh is an independent software consultant, specializing in
- software development environments and process improvement. He has
- been involved in environment and tool integration projects for the
- past seven years at organizations including AT&T and Software
- Productivity Consortium. He is currently leading a number of PCTE-
- based projects exploring the appropriate use of PCTE as an environ-
- ment construction and integration technology.
