- AN INTRODUCTION TO ECMA PCTE
- A Tutorial on PCTE Technology and Strategy
-
- Offered by Software Design & Analysis, Inc.
-
- 28-29 September 1992 - Sheraton Boston, Boston, MA and
- 7-8 December 1992 - McLean Hilton, Tyson's Corner, VA
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- The costs of building industrial strength software development
- environments and tools can be prohibitive. A set of common services
- is needed to facilitate the rapid construction and integration
- of software tools and environments. The PCTE (Portable Common Tool
- Environment) interface defines such a set of common services. The
- services have been defined to be scalable, language independent,
- evolvable, and implementable on local area networks.
-
- The European Computer Manufacturers Association accepted a version
- of the PCTE interface definition in December, 1990 as ECMA Standard
- 149. This version is being presented for international standard-
- ization. The PCTE interface is gaining widespread acceptance within
- the platform, CASE tool and software development environment com-
- munities, and several organizations have produced preliminary im-
- plementations.
-
- INTENDED AUDIENCE
-
- This two-day program is designed to provide software project man-
- agers, software engineers, software tool and environment builders,
- and software technology decision makers insight into the applica-
- bility of PCTE for creating supportive software environments.
-
- OUTLINE
-
- I. The History and Strategic Nature of the PCTE Initiative
-
- Discussion of: the major activities that have influenced
- the PCTE initiative from 1983 to the present; the significance
- of PCTE from technology, industry and market perspectives;
- and the current PCTE-related positions of major tool and
- platform vendors.
-
- II. Discussion of the basic mechanisms that underlie PCTE,
- including:
-
- - Object Management System: data repository services.
- - Schema Management: schema definition and modification
- services.
- - Execution Management: process execution management services
- - Inter-Process Communication: process-process communication
- and data exchange services.
- - Concurrency Control and Integrity: multiuser and multi-
- process coordination and transaction services.
- - Notification: data access notification services.
- - Security: discretionary and mandatory access control
- services.
- - Accounting: system resource utilization monitoring
- services.
- - Distribution: data and process distribution services and
- system configuration services.
-
- III. Exploiting PCTE
-
- Discussion of issues important to exploiting PCTE, including
- tool architectures, schema development, and tool migration
- strategies.
-
- IV. Question and Answer Period
-
- Open question and answer period among lecturers and attendees.
-
- REGISTRATION
-
- Registration is limited to provide a high quality education experience.
- Registration information and forms follow.
-
- SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE....
-
- Ian Thomas works on environment framework and integration projects
- at Software Design & Analysis, Inc. His previous work at Hewlett-
- Packard's Software Engineering Systems Division and Bull's Corp-
- orate Research Center involved a number of projects that built in-
- tegrated tool sets on the PCTE interfaces. His current technical
- activities emphasize environment frameworks, environment integra-
- tion technology, software process support, and software engineering
- database issues.
-
- Christian Bremeau also works on environment framework and integra-
- tion projects at Software Design and Analysis, Inc. During his pre-
- vious work at GIE Emeraude, he was a member of the PCTE+ design team
- and one of the architects of the Emeraude implementation of PCTE+.
- More recently, he has been guiding the Ada bindings for PCTE
- through the ECMA standardization process. His technical activities
- involve environment framework design and the use of framework
- technology in the construction of environments.
-
- Brian Nejmeh is an independent software consultant, specializing
- in software development environments and process improvement.
- He has been involved in environment and tool integration projects
- for the past seven years at organizations including AT&T and
- Software Productivity Consortium. He is currently leading a number
- of PCTE-based projects exploring the appropriate use of PCTE as an
- environment construction and integration technology.
