- I am currently having a disagreement with IBM regarding their
- interpretation of RFC959. I am using their MVS FTP server
- (part of their TCP/IP for MVS package), and I think their
- server does not adhere to the RFC. IBM disagrees.
-
- I am looking for someone who can give me a definitive judgement
- on whether IBM's server is doing the right thing or not.
-
- The behaviour of their server that I think is questionable is as
- follows:
-
- 1 - a response code of "250" to a STRU command;
-
- 2 - a response code of "257" to a CWD command;
-
- 3 - a response code of "550" to an NLST command to indicate that
- there are no files to list.
-
-
- Section 5.4 of the RFC has "each command listed with its possible
- replies". As I read it, this section would immediately brand
- responses 1 and 2 as protocol violations, because the server's
- replies are not on the list of "possible replies".
-
- IBM's representative defended the server's actions in the following
- words:
- "I'm not sure that the intent of section 5.4 is to list each and every
- possible reply code from the server. However, section 4.2 and 4.2.1
- further define the reply codes and how they can be used to determine
- the state of the machine. Please have the customer read those sections."
-
- The third response (550 to an NLST), is listed in the RFC as a possible
- reply. However, I believe it is being misused. "550" is a error code.
- I do not see why asking for a listing of an empty directory should be
- interpreted as an error. Other FTP servers (e.g. Sun's), simply send
- back an empty list in this situation.
-
-
- Is anyone out there qualified to judge in this matter?
