-
- Well, not quite. Book Manager format is an IBM standard, and it is
- not entirely unreasonable that purchasers of IBM's TCP/IP will be
- connecting to IBM RS/6000s, AS/400s, and 370 mainframes, all of which
- come with Book Manager software, I believe. Further, the softcopy
- manuals are identical to the printed manuals you get with the product,
- so it isn't as if you can't read them.
-
- IBM faced a choice when releasing the softcopy manuals: (a) don't
- release them at all (which would have been perfectly valid, since the
- printed manuals contain exactly the same information); (b) release
- them in INF format (in which case all those customers with every other
- kind of host -- RS/6000, AS/400, and 370 mainframe -- couldn't read
- them using the host); (c) release them in Book Manager format; (d)
- release both formats (which would have increased the cost due to disk
- space). They opted for (c). I present their logic, but I leave it up
- to the reader to decide whether it was the proper decision.
-
- Why, then, did IBM opt not to use Book Manager format in OS/2 (instead
- of VIEW's INF format)? I can't answer that question because I have
- not evaluated both products side-by-side.
-
- But, to answer your question, no, not that I am aware of. IBM
- apparently has an internal utility which will convert Book Manager
- format to INF format (which is the help file format used by OS/2's
- VIEW utility), but it has not been released externally. It may be as
- part of the employee written software program.
