- Another solution is to use a printer driver that IS available that is "close
- enough" to your printer to work. The original DeskJet is a PCL 3 printer with
- 128K memory and no softfont support, as I recall. So is the original LaserJet.
- So if you have a DeskJet you ought to be able to use the LaserJet (original
- 128K version) driver as a work around. Other DeskJet printers are supersets of
- the original DeskJet as I understand it, so they should also work with the
- LaserJet driver. I suspect that the DeskJet 500+ may be more like a
- LaserJet II and could be better supported by that driver instead.
-
- Basically, if you don't have a driver that exactly matches your device, try to
- find a driver that IS available which most closely matches your devices
- features without exceeding them. That way at least you have the functionality
- of the supported device. And on HP PCL printers, you can often get away with
- using a driver that expects features that your printer may not have because
- HP designed PCL (and their very similar terminal command set too) to have
- devices ignore commands which are not supported. That minimizes the effect of
- using a driver that implements a feature your device doesn't have. You should
- still, however, try to match as closely as possible the features without
- exceeding the device's ability if possible.
-
- As I don't personally use a DeskJet, "your mileage will vary." Good luck!
