- ATI Crystal Fonts driver:
- -------------------------
-
- I downloaded a 256-colour wallpaper and to my dissapointment found that
- the ATI Windows 3.1 Crystal Fonts driver was only 16 colours (or at
- least the version that I have was). But this is just an observation.
-
- ATI Stereo FX:
- --------------
-
- I also have an ATI Stereo FX. After playing a few WAV files in Windows,
- it only plays the first fraction of a second of subsequent file. I read
- in the manual that this is an IRQ setting problem, but I have not been
- able to fix it. Would a Sound Blaster Pro driver do the trick?
-
- QEMM and virtual memory:
- ------------------------
-
- Another (big) problem: after installing QEMM, I kept getting "Out of
- memory" errors. On checking the virtual memory settings, I got this:
-
- "The partitioning scheme on your hard disk prevents the creation of
- a permanent swap file. You can create a temporary swap file."
-
- After de-installing QEMM (restoring the original HIMEM and EMM386
- settings in my CONFIG.SYS) and resetting the virtual memory, the
- problem dissapeared. I assume it was QEMM affecting it because the
- virtual memory worked fine beforehand. (Also, after reading about the
- Stealth speed degradation in PC Mag, I did some HDD speed checks with
- Norton SI. With Stealth, the HDD rated 4.5. Without (QEMM still
- installed) it rated 6.1. This is close to the normal (non-QEMM)
- figure. However Stealth had been removed before I noticed the Win
- problem -- could Stealth have made an effect on Win that lasted after it
- was removed?)
-
- So, anyway, it seems that I will have to resort to a different Win
- system configuration after all. I was kind of hoping that QEMM would
- not make this necessary. Does anybody have any explanations or hints on
- how to fix this? (I have AMI BIOS 486-33 with ATI Graphics ULTRA, ATI
- Stereo FX and Connor 210MB HDD).
-
- With 8 MB of memory, I thought maybe virtual memory would not be
- necessary. But (with a 2MB Smartdriver) with 2.9MB free I was getting
- "Out of memory messages". This seems bad. Is there a reason?
-
-
- Thank you in advance.
