- Tom: yes-Yes-YES!!! Great Idea!!!
- It's not clear that Pat and Henry got the main points that Jeremy and
- I were making. The main point is that while the Government (and many
- businesses too, I gather) will spend lavishly for some things, luxurious
- accomodations for employees are not one.
-
- Possibly an analogy will help make the point. Many auto repair shops
- artificially inflate their prices for materials, because many people
- find a bill like this:
-
- Parts: $200.50 (Washer) + Labor: $100 = Total: $300.50
-
- more agreeable than a bill like this:
-
- Parts: $0.50 (Washer) + Labor: $300 = Total: $300.50
-
- In the first case, most of the cost seems out of control of the immediate
- establishment and therefore less questionable. In the second case, the
- customer may be less certain whether he's getting his money's worth.
- Think of the conference fees as parts and the travel expenses as labor.
-
- I know this isn't enough to convince those people who haven't personally
- had to deal with a rigid, arbitrary, and capricious travel claims office,
- but they should really reserve judegment.
-
- Once again, Great Idea! -- but make it +$100 & -$20/day to see that at
- least the cheapest hotel is within the Government limits. By the way,
- I think many businesses use the same lovely little book--they may be
- forced to if they have any government contract, I think.
