- Does anybody know if Sun have any plans to make their Multimedia Mail
- (as implemented in the mailtool in OpenWindows 3 ?) MIME compliant?
-
- I sometimes get mail messages with lines like:
-
- ----------
- X-Sun-Data-Type: text
- X-Sun-Data-Description: text
- X-Sun-Data-Name: text
- X-Sun-Content-Lines: 4
-
- in them, which I guess come from Sun Multimedia Mail, which my MIME
- mail reader just treats as "normal" text (fair enough, there's no
- Mime-Version: header field).
-
- It seems that there wouldn't be too much work to change the way the
- mailtool attaches messages (create a good boundary for a multipart
- message change the X-Sun fields to the appropriate MIME fields and use
- one of the encoding schemes specified in RFC 1341).
-
- MIME already specifies content types for text / multipart / application /
- message / image / audio / video, and the only "benefit" Multimedia
- Mail seems to have is that it compresses data sometimes, but on
- efficient data formats such as JPEG and MPEG how much does compression
- affect the file size?
-
- Were Sun to make Multimedia Mail to embrace MIME then they might want
- to put a richtext editor into the mailtool so that people don't have
- to resort to feature stuffed (expensive) editors to create postscript
- just to unerline or embolden a few words...
-
- So, is anyone (inside or outside Sun) doing anything like this, or
- even thinking about it? I'd like to know...
