  19. and to the many other folks who mailed me answers to my question.

  21. I had wondered if the null chars ( 0x00 ) I had observed in the mailbox
  22. file were functional ( and necessary ) separators. The consensus seems
  23. to agree with  arensb@kong.gsfc.nasa.gov (Andrew Arensburger - RMS):

  32. I also got numerous suggestions for programs to filter/pre-process mail, 
  33. including procmail, filter ( in elm ), mh, etc. ( And investigating this
  34. is one of the things that prompted my other questions about POP vs. IMAP: 
  35. If I filter my incoming mail on my unix host, then I can't access that 
  36. mail with POP - which can only access the default mailbox ( usually 
  37. /var/spool/mail/_user_ ). - Someone else has already posted a summary
  38. of POP/IMAP/PCMAIL clients and servers in another thread. I will post
  39. a followup when I have something more to add. )

  44. I note that elm, besides a Status of New,Read, etc., also has a 
  45. "permanent" status of Urgent, Form-letter, etc.

  47. Is this also encoded in the "Status:" header field?

  49. Is it "legal" or "well-behaved" to SEND a "Status:" line in a header,
  50. or is this always inserted by the UA software ?

  52. i.e. Am I allowed to send a message with "Status: Urgent" and does 
  53. any software besides 'elm' know what to do with that field? )

  55. Are there recognized values across different mailers for that Status field?
