- As prophetic as it may sound, John Smith (Datasmiths, SF, CA)
- told me all platforms were dead now that the 486-p5 upgrade
- path is available.
-
- This is a purely market-wise assessment. I think the thread on
- PC based graphic accelerator cards points out the strong impetus for
- low-end high-speed devices in the future. When is the future though?
-
- Let's see. You can buy Indigo-on-a-card from SGI, for a
- whatever bus. Maybe somebody can say whether this will fit
- into an advanced PC type architecture.
-
- Alias is marketing their modeler, previewer for IBM PCs at
- much less cost than there workstation software. TOPAS from
- AT&T is also available, as well as Swivel3D and AutoCAD 13.
-
- Wavefront will run model and preview on 486 platforms (rumor).
-
- OpenGL for 486->p5 looks probable (?).
-
- Where does Apple fit into this? The computer for the rest
- of us (rich folk). Probably somewhere out in desktop land, who knows?
-
-
- BTW I got a covox card for my 486 which is way cool (man).
- You train a command three times and the card will generate
- keystrokes upon hearing the command. Not accurate for
- one or two syllables but great for someting like:
- "Fireup CorelDraw" to open up applications.
- "DialNetComm" to log into my account. etc.
-
- I figure with one of those cool head mounted mouse and
- a breath-sensor for a button, with voice recognition you
- could work-in-bed. Damage may result if your monitor
- falls on your bed in the event of an earthquake though.
-
- MicroCrap update: Microsoft C/C++ crashes Microsoft Windows
- upon compilation with the following C++ code:
- #include <stdio.h>
- #include <string.h>
- main(){
- cout <<"Hello, world!\n";
- }
-
- This is out-of-the box. Bummer, huh.
