- For those who don't like the "glitz" of SIGGRAPH, or want to focus soley on
- the technical or academic aspects of graphics, just don't go to the exhibit.
- There's plenty of stuff in the papers and panel sessions, BOFS, workshops,
- and Showcase, Exhibitor are showy and glitzy to draw people's attention.
- That's the nature of their business (or more like the nature of the buyer).
-
- Re: Steve Lamont writes:
- An example: As I mentioned above, my lab was a collaborator with the
- San Diego Supercomputer Center and The Scripps Research Institute in a
- SIGGRAPH Showcase project (The Distributed Laboratory --
- Electron-telemicroscopy -- it was written up in June CACM if you want
- details). In one memo we received from the Showcase management we
- were exorted "to put on a good show" (my paraphrase but I believe
- accurate in substance) and not treat Showcase as a poster session
- because we were "competing" with the hoo-hah of the manufacturer's
- exhibits.
-
- I think this was meant as a helpful comment. Had you treated your showcase
- demo as a poster session and just sat there, people would have just past
- you by to watch more interesting things. (I, too, was a Showcase participant)
- Though I don't remember the specific message, it doesn't sound like they
- condoned what the exhibitors did, just warned you about it.

- Re: Samuel Uselton
- As Sam, and many other people notice, the exhibitor floor space was MUCH smaller
- than previous years. That's where a lot of money is generated, and that is where
- the recession showed a lot.
