- Here's the scoop on a modem problem I've been having ever since I picked it up:
-
- HARDWARE:
-
- Macintosh SE/30, System 7.0.1 (tuned up)
- Telebit Worldblazer Modem, ROM 5.01
- Generic Mac Modem cable
- OR
- Hardware Handshaking Mac Cable
-
- AND
- Macintosh IIci, System 7.0.1 (tuned up) <-- same setup as the SE/30 above
-
- SOFTWARE:
-
- Zterm 0.9, Zterm 0.85, Microphone II 3.0, White Knight 11.x
-
- THE PROBLEM:
-
- I have successfully attached a Telebit 2500 modem to the SE/30 before with DTE
- speeds up to 19200 using a generic Mac modem cable. No problems using XON/XOFF
- flow control.
-
- I have had enormous problems getting my Telebit Worldblazer to work properly
- with the SE/30 (which HAS had a serial port loopback check performed
- successfully by an authorized Apple dealer recently). Using any DTE speeds, but
- especially at 38400 or 57600, the modem behaves erratically, substituting the
- letters X,c,and a for almost any input.
-
- (i.e., you type "ATDT 18005551212"
- you see "Xa~~ 18acccc121XXXX" )
-
- The higher the term speed, the worse it gets. If you type SLOWLY enough at
- 19200, these errors go away. Don't even think about file transfer, though. With
- the hardware handshaking cable (and s58/68 set to 2), the modem's
- DTR,RTS,and CTS lights go NUTS, and communication just doesn't happen.
-
- THE KICKER:
-
- This modem/cable/software setup WORKS FINE ON THE ABOVE-MENTIONED IIci. No
- problems with DTE speeds at 57,600, either. Since I've previously set the DTE
- to 19200 on the T2500, I don't know why the Worldblazer can't take it.
-
- 1-800-TELEBIT (tech support) hasn't heard of this problem. I've tried three
- different (previously working) generic modem cables and one HWHS cable.
-
- Has anyone any advice to offer me? (No snide remarks about switching to a
- different brand, thank you.)
-
-
- Thanks for reading this far,
-
