- Yes, we had quite a go-around with this.
-
-
- >1. What is the "time bomb" that the ad talks about?
-
- A modem that doesn't use Hayes's patented escape sequence to drop to
- command mode, i.e. <pause>+++<pause>. It's the pauses that are
- important. If you have a modem that just uses the +++ because they
- don't want to pay Hayes a lot of money, and you don't disable the +++
- sequence and use an out-of-band sequence, you could be kicked into
- command mode by something like this paragraph. It's a case of RTFM.
- It's a legitimate concern, but is completely preventable, and is
- expressed here with great mastery of FUD. The time bomb also exists
- in Hayes modems (I've hit it before, before I disabled the escape
- sequence completely), it's just less probable.

-
- Bingo (the latter).
-
-
- >3. What does the Hayes Patent 4,549,302 cover?
-
- The pause is the critical part.
-
-

-
- No, no, they've been suing people for a long, long time. Managers,
- lawyers, and engineers, the three branches of a large tech
- corporation. This is a reaction to those companies which have dared
- not use the Hayes sequence and pay Hayes for it.
