- modem go online and begin its negotiation sequence as though it
- had dialed a call, but after the call has been manually dialed
- with a handset. Several folks suggested ATO, ATD and ATH1. I
- had already tried those and none worked. ATD is the one which
- should work, but it doesn't because it normally waits for
- dialtone before proceeding.

- The answer is to dial the call, then type ATXD<return> and hang
- up the handset as soon as the call begins ringing.

- The secret, which is well protected by most of the modem manuals
- I have on hand, is that the X command is badly mislabelled.
- Controlling result codes (at least in the case of DIALTONE) is
- only a side effect of what the command really does, which is to
- control whether or not the D command waits for dialtone.
