- If your IBM PC is one of the *early early* ones, and uses the original IBM Asynch adapter
- board (or perhaps a similarly older after-market one), the problem may be the asynch
- controllers' ability to service the serial port at speeds of 9600 or above. I recall when
- I used the IBM board I could not use a 9600 baud modem, even with a 9600 baud serial port
- (DTE) rate. A quick check would be to see if the serial controller chip on the board bears
- the id of 8250 (the controller chip is the largest one on the IBM boards). If so, try
- upgrading to a controller that uses a NS16450 or NS16550AFN chip (the later being the
- preferable one, but the former will probably work on an IBM PC if you do not use a serial
- port (DTE) rate above 19200. At any rate, since the cost is fairly close, go for the 16550).
- Some OEM boards allow for socketed controller chips (also called UARTs), but all IBM boards
- have them soldered in, so purchase of a new board is usually indicated.
