  11. Hello!
  12.    I just received a new (maybe) ZyXEL U-1496E (external) modem
  13. direct from Zero One Networking yesterday.  Out of curiosity,
  14. I took the top off of it to have a look at what was inside.
  15. To my surprise, I found that the SERIAL NUMBER ON THE OUTSIDE
  16. CASE WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE ONE ON THE INSIDE BOARD!
  17. The serial number on all of the paperwork which came with the
  18. modem was that on the outside case.  This seems unusual to me,
  19. so I called Zero One Networking about it.  They told me that
  20. this was normal, and not to be concerned with it.  Yet questions
  21. remain unanswered.  What is to stop an individual or a
  22. corporation that owns several of these modems to send an old,
  23. broken, out of warranty modem board back for warranty repairs
  24. in a modem case that is still covered under the warranty? 
  25. I can't believe that no one at Zero One hasn't thought of this.
  26. I must therefore conclude that this situation exists because
  27. it is somehow to their advantage.  The only thing that I can
  28. think of is that it gives them the opportunity to sell old, 
  29. used, repaired modem boards as new modems put into new cases!
  30. If this is true, it is outrageous!  
  31.    If you too own a ZyXEL U-1496E that you purchased, compare
  32. the serial number on the outside case with the one on your
  33. board inside.  If they are completely different, could you
  34. send me e-mail telling me how different they are?  If you
  35. have the same modem and the numbers compare favorably, could
  36. you send me e-mail telling me as such?  I am interested in 
  37. this very much.  If I get enough responses I will post a
  38. summary of what I have found.  
  39.    BTW, in case you're interested, the number on my outside
  40. case is: S270217036, and the number on my inside board
  41. is: 2700217874.
