- Actually, V.42bis says nothing about what result codes might be
- issued. Whether a particular modem will issue a "COMPRESSION:
- V42BIS" (or whatever) result code just because the V.42bis-related
- parameters existed in the XID (negotiation) frame, even though the
- result of the negotiation was that compression was turned off in
- both directions, is up to that manufacturer. I dare say it would be
- pretty silly to do so.

- There is no standardized benchmarks for comparing performance of
- V.42bis modems at this time. However, TIA TR-30.3 is currently
- developing a TIA Telecommunications Systems Bulletin (TSB 38) which
- will provide "application notes" on modem testing methodology.
- Although I haven't personally been involved in the work on this TSB
- (another Hayes systems engineer has been representing us in that
- activity), it is my understanding that it will include both
- recommended testing procedures and test files for V.42bis
- compression.
