- Since a large (and growing) number of phone connections are carried over 64
- kbps digitized lines, I would discredit anything that plans to do better than
- that.

- How closely you can approach that 64 kbps depends on the quality of your
- line (signal to noise ratio, very low distortion) and of the components in the
- modem (since the signals must be more finely distinguished as you increase the
- bits per symbol rate).

- I'd guess that V.fast is a good compromise between the need to build a
- faster modem and the reality of quality in components and in mass production.
