- My understanding is that there was a bug in the NS16550, hence the 16550A.
- The "F" seems to have been added after some improvements to the chip or the
- mask, though apparently not any bug fix. The "N" means that the chip is in a
- 40 pin DIP package, whereas a "V" would indicate a 64-pin square carrier.

- When a company says "16550", you have no idea whether it's an NS16550A.
- However, it's less likely an NS16550-non-A than some other manufacturer's
- 16550 clone. There are problems with Western Digital's 16550 at low speeds
- (under 2400 bps), and I've been downright unable to get MX 16550s to work
- for me. Then again, I had some trouble with National's PC16550 batch.
