- : Wrong. If the problem is something along the lines of cheap parts in the
- : analog side of the box or perhaps (which I believe explains the horrid 'ping'
- : latency test results of the Digicom Scout+, and probably applies to some of the
- : el-cheapo Rockwell chipset modems, as well) a tremendously underpowered
- : microcontroller as a CPU, 5 years of revisions to the EPROMS will do nothing
- : at all. There's a 68030 in my Telebit, so I'm quite happy (though I don't
- : really quite understand why _that_ much horsepower is needed to run the v.32bis
- : side, yet Telebit say v.32bis is impossible on the slower T1600 platform, though
- : I believe ZyXeL et. al do it just fine on similar hardware. Opinions anyone?)
-
- Sure, here is an opinion. I believe modems have stuck with CISC just
- about long enough. Why not move just everything onto the DSP. In next
- generation Digicom modems, for example, I would be surprised to find a
- microcontroller at all. The Analog Devices 2101 DSP is rather powerful
- and can handle this easily I understand. (Ask Analog Devices for
- a ADSP2101 spec sheet or databook if interested.)
-
- As for the ping latency, I fear its not as easy as you seem to imply.
- The Scouts latency is being worked on, but I dont have a report yet.
- Telebits with the 68030 dont necessarily have the best latencies and
- the Digicom 9624LE+, which has a very low one, possesses a similar
- microcontroller as the Scout+ if I am not mistaken.
-
-
- Disclaimer: I sell Digicom products. (A reader and Scout buyer asked me
- to include disclaimers for 'good style'. So be it.)
