- : The modems are probably establishing a mutually agreeable carrier, but
- : are probably having problems with error control or data compression
- : negotiation. Well that's what happens with mine when I call one of
- : my feed site's modems. I had to disable my HST DS v32bis' LAPM detection
- : phase. This causes it to assume the other modem is using LAPM. The other
- : is and this works for me.
- :
- : BTW to do this on the HST DS v32bis set s27=49 (I don't know if this
- : means anything to you :)
-
- What I'd check first is the setups. For example MOST (even older) MNP
- capable modems may be set to reject a non-error-correcting link. It is
- possible that you're sending setup strings when dialing out, and reverting
- to different settings for incoming calls.
-
- If you have a neighbor (local modem user) with which to test... Try dialing
- in REVERSE mode (append an R to your dialstring) with the distant end pre-
- arranged to pick up and manually answer with ATX3D, or similar originate-
- mode answer. This, at least, should give a pretty easy way to confirm your
- capacity to connect to an incoming call. From there, look to setups.
-
- As for register/AT-letter settings, this depends upon the modem. I have
- one older modem which has answer defaults (``Reliable forced/reliable ignored
- /reliable initiated'') set in an S register, but uses the ``N'' dial string
- suffix, (or M, as I recall for forced) to override this on outgoing calls.
- Others on hand, also recognize (or tolerate) the ``N'' in the dialstring,
- but use different S-registers, and add alphabets preceeded by ``\'',
- ``%'', ``-'', a *H, and even ``)M'', plus ``"H'', and ``"O''.
-
- Hope this helps.
