  17. The rural or farther out suburban folks are more likely to get a satellite
  18. dish than subscribe to cable.  For those straddling this fence, cable has to
  19. be fairly cheap for it to be useful.  So cable companies charge a bit less to
  20. be a bit more competitive.

  22. Folks in the city, however, usually don't have the choice of a satellite dish. 
  23. Cable is the only way to go.  Cable companies know this.  They have no need to
  24. price themselves competitively against anyone or anything else.

  26. This is one reason I vote for the "video dialtone" idea.  Let someone be in
  27. charge of the cables and billing, and providing the dial tone (be it voice
  28. phone, modem service, entertainment services, whatever).  Let someone else be
  29. the actual service provider, the person who ultimately gets the money and with
  30. whom I contract to receive HBO, Nick, ESPN, etc.  This way I can contract with
  31. a number of people, depending on their prices and picture quality and
  32. whatever, and I end up getting the best price.  Competition is served.  And
  33. someone analogous to the local phone company is in charge of running and
  34. maintaining the fiber cable to my house, the cable through which the various
  35. competing services are vying for my entertainment dollar.

  37. The whole idea of exclusive territories for cable has always bothered me.  It
  38. also bothers me a bit that this has nothing to do with modems, yet I'm posting
  39. it here.  So I'll stop.  Soapbox off.
