  31. Human beings  very often tend,  mistakenly, to look at differences as 
  32. if they  were  contradictions,  and therefore  focuses and techniques 
  33. from different fields  are prevented from being used as support.  The 
  34. division of the phenomenal world into contradictory pairs is,  as the 
  35. recently deceased Nobel  Prize Winner  in Medicine,  K. Lorenz (1974) 
  36. said,   "an  unknown   ordering  principle,   an  aprioristic  mental 
  37. imperative  with distant  origins.  The resulting tendency  to create 
  38. mutually exclusive disjunctive concepts  is clearly predominant among 
  39. many  thinkers.  Although  this  mental  predisposition  is of  great 
  40. importance, it has to be brought to a halt",  at least in the area of 
  41. software. Of course, great intellectual rigour is needed to hold down 
  42. this antithetic, though productive, human faculty.

  44. The  paradigm  of  power,  that is,  the  massive  use of  search  as 
  45. intensive  computational  power,  and  the  paradigm  of knowledge as 
  46. intensive intellectual work  were antagonistic  until a few years ago 
  47. in AI;  the extremes  were reconciled  by the use of  heuristics  and 
  48. other  kinds of  knowledge  which  guide and put  constraints  on the 
  49. search.

  51. Owing to the importance  of heuristics and the processes of discovery 
  52. in AI,  linked  with  the fact  that  the  500th  Anniversary  of the 
  53. Discovery of America is being commemorated this year,  it was thought 
  54. appropriate for the leitmotiv of the  5th Symposium  to be Heuristics 
  55. and Discovery,  and the conference will also deal with a little known 
  56. eventuality very much associated with discovery called serendipity.
  57.  
  58. The  Organizing  Committee  is  aware  that  it is  very difficult to 
  59. improve  upon the  company of  speakers in  former  years,  which has 
  60. included  the Nobel prize winner  Simon,  the  father  of  Artificial 
  61. Intelligence  McCarthy,  Jaime  Carbonell,  among  other  outstanding 
  62. members of the  AI community.  However,  we have managed to gather an 
  63. extraordinary  array  of  AI  researchers  and  scientists  for  this 
  64. Symposium, given the historical event that is being commemorated.
