  14. Appended is a note from CRTNET (via the CLINTON mailing list) about
  15. electronic access to presidential candidates during the election
  16. season.

  18. I feel the world shaking, just a bit, as I read this type of
  19. notice and others.  For example, Clinton (and possibly Bush)
  20. is accessible via Compu$erve.  In addition, speeches by
  21. the candidates and the president (among others) are finding
  22. their way to anonymous FTP sites and mailing lists.
  23.  
  24. For this year, the net offers some increased access to political
  25. candidates, and a public-accessible store of important information.
  26. For years to come, I see increasing equality of access to
  27. candidates, and a more empowered population -- not only will
  28. we be able to expect direct access to our representatives, we
  29. will have an electronic record of what they have to say on
  30. various issues (plus, I suppose, access to their actual performance
  31. records).  As public access to the net grows, through such
  32. efforts as Freenet and the work of public libraries and
  33. schools, we will become more empowered and less dependent on
  34. others for screening information.

  67. "President Bush and Gov. Clinton will address PRODIGY
  68. members and answer selected questions on the Close-Up Board
  69. over the next two months.

  71. You can post public questions to Bush at Prodigy ID BUSH99B
  72. starting August 26 under the topic Ask the Candidate.
  73. Clinton at Prodigy ID CLIN99B will answer members' questions
  74. under the same topic the week of Sept. 7.  Both candidates
  75. were offered equal access.  Their participation on the
  76. Close-Up Board reflects their campaign schedules.

  78. Bush will post position statements on 4 issues Aug. 26,
  79. Sept. 9, Sept. 23, and Oct. 14.  Following each statement
  80. his press staff will select 5 questions for the president to
  81. answer.  Those answers will be approved by Bush and posted
  82. the following week.  His answers will be typed and submitted
  83. by a campaign staff member.

  85. Clinton will post 1 position statement on the Close-up board
  86. and answer 10 questions a day for 5 days Sept. 7-11.  His
  87. press staff will select the questions.  Answers will be
  88. personally approved by the governor and posted by a campaign
  89. staff member the next day.

  91. Each of President Bush's position statements will focus on
  92. one national issue.  Because of the limited number of
  93. questions answered by the presidient it will help if you
  94. direct your questions to the substance of that issue.

  96. Governor Clinton's statement will summarize his campaign
  97. positions.

  99. The text of the candidates' responses will be available for
  100. the duration of the campaign in the Speeches/Interviews
  101. section in POLITICS news."

  105. This is not an endorsement of Prodigy by me, but I thought
  106. you all may want to know about this in case some of you are
  107. members.  I will download the statements and some of the
  108. replies/questions that I think may be of interest.  I will
  109. also download from Prodigy and post their final answers.  If
  110. any of you would like me to post a question for you, let me
  111. know (please don't make it too lengthy) and I will enter it,
  112. but I can't guarantee that it will be specifically answered.
