  19. Position Title:  Electronic Information Services Librarian
  20.                  Reference Department, Alderman Library,
  21.                  University of Virginia

  23. The University of Virginia is seeking an Electronic Information Services
  24. Librarian to provide reference service and oversee electronic information
  25. services in the Alderman Library Reference Department.  The Alderman
  26. Reference Department is the Library's central reference service point
  27. and has a primary focus on the social sciences and humanities.
  28.  
  29. The University of Virginia Library is the 33rd largest library in the
  30. Association of Research Libraries.  Comprising eleven libraries, the
  31. University Library system, along with the professional school libraries of
  32. law, health sciences, and graduate business, serves a faculty of over 2,000
  33. and a student body of close to 18,000.
  34.  
  35. Building upon the firm foundation of traditional collections and resources,
  36. the Library is aggressively building its holdings of electronic materials and
  37. enhancing its electronic information services.  The Library's main
  38. computer system, VIRGO, provides a NOTIS online catalog with
  39. circulation, acquisitions, and serials check-in.  Also on VIRGO are nine
  40. Wilson indexes and Current Contents, with ABI Inform and Newspaper
  41. Abstracts to be available in September 1992.  A staffed Electronic Text
  42. Center has been established in Alderman with state-of-the-art hardware
  43. and software to access the Oxford English Dictionary, English Poetry 600-
  44. 1900, the Patrologia Latina, and a rapidly-growing number of additional
  45. text and image files.

  47. The University of Virginia is located in a cosmopolitan area within half an
  48. hour's drive from the Blue Ridge mountains and two hours from
  49. Washington, D.C., and enjoys the rich historical tradition of its founder,
  50. Thomas Jefferson.

  52. Job Description:
  53.  
  54. Reports to Director of Reference Services.  Coordinates the work of
  55. Reference Department staff in electronic information services.  Evaluates,
  56. implements, and publicizes new electronic information systems.  Provides
  57. technical support by troubleshooting software and hardware problems.
  58. Participates in reference service, information management education, and
  59. collection development activities in assigned reference areas.
  60.  
  61. Required Qualifications and Experience:
  62.  
  63. 1.MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or a master's degree in a
  64. related field.
  65.  
  66. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of reference service and of emerging
  67. electronic information services and their applications to libraries.
  68.  
  69. 3.Effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, and presentation
  70. skills.
  71.  
  72. 4.Experience with microcomputer software applications; experience with
  73. hardware or interest in acquiring skills related to hardware maintenance.

  75. 5.Commitment to professional growth and development.
  76.  
  77. Salary: $24,000 or higher, depending on qualifications.
