- Due to a very brief temporary cash surplus, I'm looking
- into buying a 14.4 modem (32.bis, and all that). I've
- been told to avoid the cheapos (like my zoom 2400), because
- standards re command sets, etc., haven't settled down
- at that rate. Now, I was all set to buy a "Supra",
- on recommendation ($309), when the salesman helpfully
- told me that the modem simply won't operate in Europe phone lines;
- he didn't know about Israel. I have a call in to
- Supra corp., but in the mean-time, do any of you
- Israeli's or Europeans know about such things?
-
- There is a possibility I might travel in my Ur-namesake's
- footsteps (although moving from west to east), and if
- I do want to go on-line _from_ Israel, it would nice not
- to have to buy a new modem.
-
- Thanks,
-

- P.S. McIntosh note: according to today's _NY Times_ (Metro
- section, p. B6, byline Harold Faber,9/2/92, "Big Crop of
- Small Apples Predicted"), the NY Agricult. Statistics Service
- forecasts a NY state crop of 1.1 billion pounds, up 5% from last
- year (NY is second behind Washington, w/ 4.7 billion lbs, 1991).
- Early eating apples are going for 20 cents/lb wholesale.
- The early variety of McIntosh, Jonamacs, are said to be coming
- on line now, w/ McIntosh proper early next week.
- NY also produces "large quantities" of Rome, Rhode Island
- Greening, Red Delicious, and Idared, and "smaller quantities"
- of Empire, Golden Delicious, and Crispin.
-
- I haven't heard of 9/10ths of these types, but this information
- may be of interest to some. Plus its a plug for NY (I don't
- know if any Washingtonians are on the list . . . .).
