- I am a relatively new user of Notabene, and have been running
- into a problem with IBID that I hope someone may be able to
- answer for me. I have consulted with John Morris about the problem,
- and he seems to think that I have hit up against a bug in IBID.
- What do the rest of you think?
-
- The basic problem is that I run out of memory space when trying
- to generate a list of subject headings from a bibliography of
- about 350 items (when arranged by subject headings, there are
- over 700 entries). Since I originally bought IBID in order to be
- able to generate a much larger bibliography, I wonder how to
- cope with the memory problem.
-
- Here is what I have done so far, and what the result has been. I
- have dumped all memory-resident programs except one small (2.3K)
- screen-blanking program, and run Notabene from DOS (rather than
- dosshell). DOS is loaded in high memory. I have 1MB of extended
- memory, which can be formatted as a RAMDrive, if this would help
- (I've tried that--and directed overflow files to the RAMDrive, and
- it doesn't seem to do anything, which suggests to me that the
- program is not making any use of my extended memory). My hard
- drive has lots of space (I'm currently using about 30 MB out of
- 130 MB available).
-
- When I direct IBID to generate a list of all subject headings, with
- the number of items under each heading (I use Turabian, but that
- shouldn't matter), the program searches all the entries, merges all
- the temporary files together, generates all the indices, and begins
- to format the bibliography (it tells me that there are 722 entries).
- However, the formatting inevitably stops somewhere between
- number 140 and 190 (depending on whether I switched to DOS and
- back again or not). No error message is generated (not even a
- "free memory and try again" message), and the computer freezes.
-
- I can successfully generate the entire bibliography (i.e., only 350
- entries, arranged alphabetically), and have been able to generate
- bibliographies of specific subject headings (using search, and
- then generate). But I want to be able to check the consistency of
- my subject headings over all items, and that is what I cannot do.
-
- Any ideas? And will memory space be a problem as I expand the
- bibliography in the future? What should I do?
-
- Thank you for any help you can provide.
