- I'd like to add my experience with the Omnipage Pro OCR software to the list.
- I recently had the occasion to install it in our Faculty Resource Center
- and test it for suitability for a faculty member's application, which involves
- scanning German text. I created and printed out a 7-8 line paragraph
- containing the umlauts (a, o, and u with the double dots on them) and the
- double-s, represented by the lower-case beta symbol, umlauts being in both
- upper and lower case on a NeXT. This output was scanned in on a MAC, where
- our scanner is presently hooked up, and written as a TIF file in DOS format.
- I set Omnipage Pro to the German language (one of several settings available),
- and let it do its thing. Running on 486/25 EISA machine (under Windows), it
- took about 15-20 seconds to scan the file and display it on the screen.
- All the characters were recognized except for the capitol-A umlaut.
- Interestingly, earlier I had a blank line above the line containing the
- capitol umlauts. In that case, none of the capitol umlauts were recognized.
- In all cases, regular letters were recognized correctly 100%. The final part
- of the test involved created a WordPerfect 5.1 file of the scanned output.
- This was successfully read by WP5.1 without a hitch.
- Note that Omnipage Pro really wants 8meg RAM; it can run with 4meg (in this
- case it has to), but then requires a 4meg swap file on hard disk. So I
- imagine it can run faster with more RAM.
