With regard to using OCR software and scanners, I have found "OmniPage
Professional" (be careful--there are a couple different OmniPage products) to be
very effective.  I use it with a PC, Windows 3.1, and a HP ScanJet IIc scanner.

This is not a cheap solution, but "good" OCR never is.  You will not completely
eliminate errors, but with fairly clean copy, errors are minimal and sometimes
nonexistent.  OminPage Pro for the PC can be had for around $600-$700 from mail
order sources, and it works with most scanners, but the quality of your scanner
is important as well.  I have found a few minor glitches in the program and the
way it interprets scanned text, but I can live with them.

We are using it to scan in old minutes from board meetings and such to preserve
them, and I know we will find other uses as well.

OmniPage has products for the Mac as well.
