- TOPIC: The Theatre System: An object-oriented rule-based framework
- for the graphical representation of natural language systems.
-
- SPEAKER: Helga Leonhardt
-
- WHEN: Friday, August 21st, 11:00 am
-
- WHERE: Conference Room 408, SDSC
-
- ABSTRACT:
-
- The Theatre System (TS) is an object-oriented framework for the construction
- of natural language systems and a dynamic graphical interface for the use
- of those systems. Theatre's internal data structures make it ideal for
- multilingual applications, as it is language independent. Theatre is
- general enough to support almost any human language.
-
- Since objects can be reused, the framework technology was developed to
- build interactive information systems in such diverse regions as
- toxicology and pharmacology. The goal of this project is to more
- efficiently provide understanding of basic principles as well as answers
- to specific questions on such matters as the causes and effects of
- poisonings of animals and people.
-
- ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
-
- In the late 1970s, Helga Leonhardt, a specialist in language instruction,
- developed a diagrammatic framework method for representing the different
- parts of speech and how they interact. Ms. Leonhardt has recently
- completed the translation of the system into graphic form, mapping out
- their dynamic relationships and devising The Theatre System for
- portraying these relationships on screen. Currently, Ms. Leonhardt is
- a researcher at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign where she
- designs biomedical models in collaboration with domain experts. All
- models are based on the Theatre System technology. Ms. Leonhardt
- received her MA in language from San Diego State University in 1981,
- holds a Secondary Teaching Credential, and a diploma in dance and
- choreography form the University of Cologne.
