- Jocelyn Paine is under the impression that the number of mathematicians who
- do not have access to email, LaTeX and other facilities that would make it
- possible for them to receive math journals electronically is not significant.

- Speaking as one mathematician who has from time to time taken his place
- among this insignificant number, and who has no assurance of access for
- the indefinite future, I caution against basing decisions of this nature
- on the assumption of access.

- Sci.math is hardly the place to collect data on the question of access.
- Some who reads sci.math already has access and those without access are
- not in a position to speak for themselves in this forum.

- Universities are not in the business of providing logistical supports to
- independent scholars. They are not necessarily even in the business of
- providing these supports to their own faculty.
