- Building engines "loose" went out of favor about thirty years ago, at
- least among reputable shops and race builders. Good shops bring
- clearances down to the bare minimum in most circumstances.

- Opening up bearing clearances causes shear drag; this drastically
- increases bearing drag and heats the oil. Opening up the bores doesn't
- let the piston contact the walls well, resulting in improper cooling and
- poor ring seal. Etc. A "worn out" Grand National or sprint motor is
- usually tighter than a stock one off the assembly line.
