- The notched belts are much better.

- It reduces noise, it makes the tension adjustment less critical, and
- it reduces power lost in making the belt flex - you've probably
- noticed how much more flexible the new belt is.

- It doesn't affect friction - the surface material is just the same.

- The drawback is that there isn't much room for the strengtheing plies
- anymore. The materials technology to do this in the limited space
- available has only been available comparatively recently.
