  17. The notched belts are much better.

  19. It reduces noise, it makes the tension adjustment less critical, and
  20. it reduces power lost in making the belt flex - you've probably
  21. noticed how much more flexible the new belt is.

  23. It doesn't affect friction - the surface material is just the same.

  25. The drawback is that there isn't much room for the strengtheing plies
  26. anymore. The materials technology to do this in the limited space
  27. available has only been available comparatively recently.
