  11. Redmagic is beginning to develop. I've now a small vocabulary of Gaelic words
  12. that will supply me with place names, character names, and general ideas. A
  13. smaller array of Nahuatl words for my pseudo-Aztec villains, but it's a start.
  14. I plan to use the bloodthirsty Aztec gods and priests, contrasting their
  15. physical beauty and intelligence with the horror they create.

  17. The research is always fun...even a couple of hours in the reference room of a
  18. smallish suburban library can give you countless ideas for deepening and
  19. broadening your story. Some of it is serendipitous, stumbling across stuff you
  20. didn't expect to find. In other cases you know exactly what you want--the word
  21. for witch, say--and there you are with bana-bhuidseach or briosag. Some terms
  22. will stay the same, but I like to assume sound shifts have moved the
  23. characters' language in some direction or other.

  25. Meanwhile the proposal for Redmagic and a third novel, Blackmagic, is in draft
  26. form; by bringing in the third volume, I'm forcing myself to think beyond the
  27. immediate project to its culmination. I know it will involve my hero's moving
  28. among the worlds and confronting Mekhdeivush (proto-Indo-European for Great
  29. God). But that's as far as I've gone...meaning another letter to myself will be
  30. needed before I can complete the letter to my editor.
