- I may be a real anomaly in the world of tech writing, but in almost every
- job I've ever held as a tech writer, publications specialist, or what-have-
- you, I've always been either the only writer or one of two writers and I've
- been responsible for creating entire books, from concept to printing, all by
- myself. At the most, I've been able to show my work-in-progress to the other
- writer for feedback and more careful editing and proofing than I'm generally
- capable of after working on the same book for more than a month. Production
- department? You've gotta be kidding! Editors? I wish!
-
- As a "one woman show," I'm expected to know my way around whatever desktop
- publishing package the company I work for has decided to buy, as well as any
- additional graphics packages that are available for creating illustations or
- cleaning up screen dumps to be used as examples. I don't know if this has
- improved my salary or not, since I've never worked in a company that didn't
- rely on desktop publishing packages for their user documentation.
-
- However, I have noticed during my periods of searching for jobs that salary
- rates depend a lot on what industry you're trying to work in. High tech
- writers make a hell of a lot more than desktop publishing operators and
- writers working in the publishing industry. There are also increasing demands
- on writers in both the more computer-oriented skills (desktop publishing,
- graphics package competence, etc.) and more traditional publication skills
- manual pasteup, typography, 4-color work, etc.) at the same time. For tech
- writers in general, familiarity if not competence with common programming
- languages and operating systems is becoming a standard requirement.
