- LG>I would like to answer all the people who have been complaining that I hate
- LG>the deaf. These are obviously people who have just started
- LG>following my messages reccently. Let me say -- I do not
- LG>hate the deaf. I AM DEAF!! Before I lost my hearing, I
- LG>was a music lover, and sometimes I think of the outdoor
- LG>summer concerts in Philadelphia's Robin Hood Dell. I think
- LG>of the warm summer nights and the Philadelphia Ochestra and
- LG>David Oistrakh playing Beethoven's violin concerto, and I
- LG>cry. Then I think of the sound of the rain on the roof and
- LG>the wind in the treetops and the surf on the beach, and I
- LG>cry again. Then I pick up a magazine and I read some idiot
- LG>telling me what a wonderful "culture" it is to be deaf..
-
- Laurel, I do know this. You tell a Mexican-American you don't
- hate him. In the same breath you call him an idiot for extolling
- his culture, he'll believe you do hate him. There are pluses and minuses
- in every cultural group. That doesn't mean one is better than the other.
- Nor does it mean that you're an idiot for thinking your particular
- culture is wonderful. To quote, Jim, "It's a mighty poor frog who can't
- praise his own pond." From what I'm told, Deaf people (do they really
- use a capital "D?") in general are just like others. You have some
- fine people, you have some not so fine people. Like anyone else,
- they have different appreciations than certain other people. From
- my lurking, it seems there is as much hatred from "normal" thinking
- deaf toward Deaf people who just want to be deaf as the other way
- around. A shame really because I've met some of the better ones on
- both sides. Oh well, nothing new. People always find reasons to
- disagree and war with one another. If it isn't color, it's creed,
- or religion. I read once two Indian tribes in South America got
- into killing each other because of a beach worm back in 1860. Seems
- the things were a delicacy. They grew bred in extreme abundance but
- the tribes still found cause to go at each other's throats.
- This reminds me of factionism inthe barrio. It's so silly it
- borders on the ridiculous.
