- DL> Yet then you cant have ALL deaf in such a culture, I retain some
- DL> memorys of my hearing years from 1 to 7 yrs, so persons like Me,
- DL> who are DEAF, yet know about hearing, where do we fit in?
-
- All Hispanics aren't of the Hispanic culture either. That doesn't mean
- there is no wuch a thing as a Hispanic Culture. It just means some Hi
- panics aren't a part of it. I'll probably get drawn and quartered
- for coming out of lurking like this. A guy I know who claims to be a
- persona non gratis on this echo told me this. People are n't a
- culture, they're members of a culture. He said it goes beyond skin
- color or deafness. It comprises a sense of shared identity. Without
- that, a person cannot truly claim to be part of a culture. He said a
- lot of other stuff, but it's too long to put on here.
- I think he means you have to live a culture to be a genuine part
- of it. He said Americans comprise all kinds of "subspecies" of humans
- but many aren't true members of their subspecies culture because they
- lived apart from it. They became part of a distinct culture so can't
- really claim to be Irish, Welch, or Hispanic unless they lived the
- lifestyle of these groups.
- Oh forget. He says it better than I do.
