  21. I use a system from Arkenstone and it incorporates a HP Scan Jet Plus, and a
  22. card that I think comes from Calera.  Arkenstone writes the software and
  23. markets the product through nationwide delers and what you can do is call
  24. Arkenstone to locate a deler.  Call (west coast time) 1-800-444-4443.  This
  25. system has the best reputation at the present time among blind users and I
  26. am thoroughly pleased with it.  The software is designed to allow the novice
  27. to perform scanning quite easily but also allows the advanced computer user
  28. to "dig deeper" and perform very fine tuned scans.  Three interfaces allow
  29. you to work the system- 1.) Easyscan, very easy and well suited for general
  30. scanning and for use by the novice; 2.) Arkscan, presents a different
  31. interface that accomplishes what Easyscan does but with a few additions; and
  32. 3.) from the command line the advanced user has a large range of options
  33. that can be highly fine tuned and if you like writing batch files, this can
  34. be a very good way to make your own customized scanning program.

  36. I hope I don't sound like a sales person, I'm not, I am just a satisfied
  37. customer.  You can get the exact price for the system when you call, but I
  38. think the going price for the system I have (Model E) is around $3800.  I
  39. have been hearing about some other products with prices less than that but I
  40. have also heard that the old saying "you get what you pay for" is valid with
  41. scanning systems.  You can also look into the "OSCAR from T.S.I. (Tele
  42. Sensoryaids Inc.) in CA (sorry no phone #), or call Zerox and ask about the
  43. Kursweil Personal Reader. (KPR).
