- Dear Patti,
-
- I am posting the following in several conferences, because
- it BOTHERS ME..and I'm not sure why..and I'd like your opinion
- on this...
-
- This is one of the Disability Network "vignettes" which I'd
- marked with a "!?!?" before...and here's how Iexplain my
- ambivalence:
-
- Is a FINE really the way to tackle underemployment of disabled
- individuals in Canada...?
-
- What are the chances of this resulting in real shifts in salary
- and power equity ...as opposed to rush-rush hirings of any
- disabled applicant just to meet the criteria outlined...?
-
- Will tokenism make things better or worse,in the long run...,
- as far as genuine respect for the ABILITY of disabled
- individuals...?
-
- I know..I know..it's a start...and some corporations only respond
- to legal clout and fines of this kind... but you know, there's an
- old proverb in French that says "You don't catch flies with
- vinegar"...I guess I'm really worried that vinegar may make things
- even more "sour"...whether it'sfor disabled employees, female
- employees, racial minorities or people with AIDS ...isn't there a
- more efficient way to promote respect than with a club.....? Just
- curious about this... <GRIN> ONTARIO'S EMPLOYMENT EQUITY LAW

- Toronto,June 24.
-
- Eric Schryer, co-ordinator of Disabled People for Employment
- Equity, says Ontario's proposed Employment Equity Legislation is
- needed to tackle an unemployment and underemployment rate that is
- as high as 85% among people with disabilities.
-
- He said that any firm with fewer than 6% disabled employees should
- be heavily fined.
-
- He added that, following the model nowused in Germany, the fines
- could be used to pay for making the workplace more accessible.
