  29. the southern hemisphere saturday pledged to continue fighting
  30. against the north's long-standing exploitation of the developing
  31. world.

  33. ''we are here to celebrate 500 years of resistance against
  34. slavery, against poverty and against misery,'' said jean bertrand
  35. aristide, exiled president of haiti, while addressing liverpool's
  36. tall ship regatta, commemorating the 500th anniversary of
  37. christopher columbus' voyage to the new world.

  39. the celebration of columbus' 'discovery' of the americas has
  40. incensed indigenous leaders who point out that when columbus
  41. arrived, the new world was already populated by 10 million native
  42. indians -- many of whom were massacred by spanish
  43. 'conquistadores'.

  45. ''in the first one hundred years they killed 90,000 people,''
  46. said aristide. ''this was the beginning of a genocide not the
  47. beginning of a free time.''

  49. the columbus regatta has caused acute embarrassment to the
  50. liverpool council, which may have overlooked the significance of
  51. celebrating a voyage that also indirectly stimulated the slave
  52. trade. it was from liverpool that the slave ships sailed bearing
  53. human cargo to run cotton plantations in north america.

  55. ''the voyage of the tall ships is a symbolic replica of the slave
  56. traingle,'' said adam hussein, a liverpool resident of african
  57. descent. ''columbus' trip was economic and it's these same
  58. economic policies in the north that go on exploiting and
  59. plundering southern countries.''

  61. in 1789 liverpool slave traders sold an estimated 32,000 slaves
  62. for over a million pounds, an untold fortune in those days. money
  63. from the sugar plantations in the caribbean also largely paid for
  64. europe's industrial revolution.

  66. drawing a parallel between the spanish in south america and the
  67. dutch in south africa, moses mayekiso, a member of the african
  68. national congress (anc) told the rally: ''these so called
  69. 'discoverers' came and usurped our land, manipulated our people
  70. and destroyed our environment ... i call them invaders.''

  72. the resistance leaders all spoke of an inequitable sharing out of
  73. land in their countries, where they said the lion's share goes to
  74. the fairer skinned families of spanish descent. in guatemala, for
  75. instance, 70 percent of arable land is concentrated in the hands
