- SOMALIA
- A leading humanitarian organization says people in remote regions
- in Somalia are eating their clothes and goat skin bags in order to
- stay alive.

- The French organization Medicine Sans Frontiers visited the area
- close to the Kenya-Ethiopia border. Afterwards a spokesman said the
- situation was horrific and declared that immediate intervention is
- necessary. He added 80% of children under five were severely under-
- nourished - in other words, starving.

- Meanwhile, General Aydeed's faction in Somalia has formed a group
- with three other movements. The declaration of the group, called
- the Somali National Alliance, said its aim was to restore peace.

- In the meantime, Red Cross chief, Beatrice Megavant(?), has
- criticized the international community for not acting quickly
- enough to stop people dying of starvation.

- In an interview with RFI, she said if Red Cross calls for
- international aid had been heeded earlier, the tragedy in Somalia

- NIGERIA
- Nigeria's college teachers union is urging its members to go on
- strike, joining university academic staff on strike since July 20.
- University teachers are demanding increased salary and allowances,
- better funding of universities and academic freedom. (R. France

- CHAD
- Thirteen rebel fighters and five soldiers were killed in clashes
- Aug 17 in southern Chad, according to a government report saying a
- convoy of rebel vehicles fired on a military attachment.

- The government and the rebel CSNPD signed a peace accord on June

- ANGOLA
- An Angolan army column has come under attack from Unita forces.
- According to the Angap news agency, the convoy was attacked by
- soldiers with machine guns as it moved toward a town. Angolan army
- soldiers were carrying out preparation work ahead of the
- forthcoming fusion of the army with Unita, which was agreed in
- peace talks in Portugal in May 1991. Four people were wounded in
