- INTERNATIONAL ACTION CENTER LAUNCHES CAMPUS OUTREACH PROGRAM
-
-
- Hello, my name is Paul Ahuja. I am a student at New Paltz
- University and with the schools outreach program of the The
- International Action Center. We are a highly active coalition of
- many progressive groups. Our coalition's goal is to end U.S.
- intervention abroad and to preserve the rights of other countries
- to self-determination.
-
- We have been involved in many struggles in the past years. These
- include, but are not limited to; The Independent Commission of
- Inquiry into the U.S. Invasion of Panama. This effort, like many
- of the struggles we've taken on, was Chaired by Ramsey Clark the
- former U.S. Attorney General. The commission undertook an
- independent investigation into the invasion of Panama by the U.S.
- in 1989. The Commission brought back to the people in this country
- and the world, the murderous truth about the U.S. governent's
- prosecution of that war.
-
- Another event was The Peace for Cuba Appeal, an event designed to
- bring worldwide attention to the U.S. embargo, travel restrictions
- and general hostility on the part of the U.S. government towards
- Cuba. This project was headlined by a mass rally of 5,000 in N.Y.
- on Jan 25, 1992, and in San Francisco on February 2nd.
- Simultaneous events took place in a dozen cities around the world.
-
- Another ongoing effort is The Haiti Commission. This is an
- intensive investigation into the September 30th coup that deposed
- the democratically elected president of Haiti, Jean Bertrand
- Aristide and the violent repression left in its wake. The
- Commission has held teach-ins at several U.S. universities.
-
- Our latest major effort was The Commission of Inquiry for The
- International War Crimes Tribunal. The Commission held
- investigatory hearings in over 20 countries in order to obtain
- eyewitness and expert testimony on the true nature of U.S.
- involvement in the Gulf War. On the basis of this evidence Ramsey
- Clark and others drew up 19 separate charges of war crimes based
- on the Geneva Convention, Hague Convention, U.N. Charter and the
- U.S. Constitution. An international panel of 22 judges was
- convened on Feb 27-29, 1992. The judges returned a verdict of
- guilty on all 19 charges.
-
- Our work on these efforts and investigation into other areas of
- U.S. intervention is ongoing and will remain so until the U.S.
- government changes its policy of aggression to its neighbors.
-
- Although all of our events have been attended by students, in fact
- many have been held on campuses, we felt it was time for a greater
- outreach effort. We need your help! We need people to arrange
- speaking engagements, video showings, teach-ins and workshops at
- their schools. Use your connections at school to insure this
- important work gets the widespread audience it so richly deserves!
