- RE: REPUBLICAN SPECIAL INTERESTS
-
- Dear <<NAME>>:
-
- A significant theme of your coverage of the Democratic National
- Convention was that the Democratic Party and its nominee were
- seeking to distance themselves from various, powerful "special
- interests" within the party in order to appear credible to
- mainstream voters. The "special interests" label often referred to
- groups such as labor unions, blacks, gays, etc.
-
- Now the Republican National Convention is upon us. We urge you --
- in the name of tough, independent reporting, as well as balance --
- to spell out for your readers who the Republican Party's special
- interests are. Do they include the nuclear power and oil
- industries, the medical and insurance establishment, military
- contractors, etc.? The public has a right to know this
- information.
-
- Given the coverage of the Democratic convention, anything less than
- a full exploration of Republican special interests might convey to
- your readers that -- unlike the Democrats, who are beset by
- "special interests" -- the Republican Party represents only the
- "national interest." This is a biased and partisan perspective
- which I'm sure you do not want to convey.
-
- Please contact me if you have any questions. We look forward to
- seeing your coverage.
