- GREENPEACE BLASTS NORWAY'S DECISION TO EXTEND WHALING PROGRAM
-
- LONDON, August 4, 1992 (GP) Greenpeace has blasted a Norwegian
- decision to extend its current "scientific whaling" program into
- the middle of August despite a previous commitment to stop the
- whale hunt by July 31.
-
- While the Norwegians claim the extended hunt is due to bad
- weather, Greenpeace believes the real reason is to meet a whale
- kill quota of 110. At the end of last week, the whalers had
- killed half that number.
-
- The Greenpeace ship, "Solo", has been chasing the Norwegian
- whaling fleet for the past two weeks and according to on-board
- campaigner, Kieran Mulvaney, has been instrumental in reducing
- the kill.
-
- "Everywhere we went, we restricted the whaling program," he
- said. "Some of the whalers moved out of the whaling areas when we
- arrived. Some simply stopped operating. Others had to seek
- protection from the Navy, and hide in restricted waters. They
- were terrified of being caught in the act of killing whales."
-
- The "Solo" was followed by two Norwegian coastguard vessels,
- which reported the Solo's position to the whalers, by a Russian
- navy ship, and was overflown by Russian and Norwegian planes, as
- well as helicopters from Britain's Royal Navy and Royal Air
- Force.
-
- A week into Greenpeace's expedition, the head of Norway's
- scientific whaling programme, Professor Lars Walloe, announced
- that the fleet was under instructions not to kill whales while
- Greenpeace was present.
-
- "The extension of the season is a blatant attempt to make up
- for the whales they have missed in the past two weeks,"
- Mulvaney said.
-
- Greenpeace has strongly opposed any move towards
- "scientific" whaling since this opened the way to a resumption of
- full-scale commercial killing.
-
- Norway has already announced its plans to resume commercial
- whaling next year -- with or with out the approval of the
- International Whaling Commission.
