- I've a few questions regarding dump:
-
- We have ultrix running on a MicroVAX II and want to set up some kind of
- procedure to automate the backups.
-
- (1) The ultrix machine is used basically as an NFS server for other Suns on
- the network. To do a level 0 dump, must I go into single user mode? Or if,
- say, I stop NFS beforehand, could the dump be done in multi-user mode?
-
- (2) I've been toying with how I could automate the backup. I could use cron to
- kick it off, but if in my backup script I do a shutdown to single-user mode,
- how can I start the backup in single-user mode (automatically?).
-
- (3) The manuals don't suggest values for blocking factor or density. What
- should these be for a TK70?
-
- (4) Sometimes I'd like to append (incremental) dumps onto the end of the tape.
- How can I ensure that I'm at the end of the saved data on tape, before starting
- the dump (the mt command does not seem to work) ?
-
- How do others automate their backups? Does anyone have any useful scripts
- they'd like to share?
-
- Thanks, ed.
