- I have couple of Micropolis 1924-21 2.4G fast scsi disks connected to
- Sun IPX workstation. I am trying to use the following format.dat entry:
-
- disk_type = "Micropolis 1924-21" \
- : ctlr = SCSI : fmt_time = 5 \
- : trks_zone = 21 : asect = 10 : atrks = 63 \
- : ncyl = 2073 : acyl = 3 : pcyl = 2280 : nhead = 21 : nsect = 94 \
- : rpm = 5400 : bpt = 42496
-
- I tried to format it and it started just fine but after quite a long time
- it failed. The same happened for second try. Then I rebooted the
- system and at the boot I now get the following messages:
-
- esp0 at SBus slot 0 0x800000 pri 3
- esp0: Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
- sd1 at esp0 target 1 lun 0
- esp0: Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
- esp0: Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
- esp0: Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
- sd1: Vendor 'MICROP', product '1924-21MZ1077801', 4096656 512 byte blocks
- (ie. several times the transmit rate message)
-
- If I do dkinfo sd1 to the disk, I get several 'Target 1 now Synchronous
- at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate' messages and after some time 'sd1: no
- such disk'.
-
- If I try to format the disk I get the following messages:
-
- Formatting...Medium error during mode select
- ASC: 0x0 ASCQ: 0x0
-
- sd1c: Error for command 'mode select'
- sd1c: Error Level: Fatal
- sd1c: Sense Key: Media Error
- sd1c: Vendor 'MICROP' error code: 0x22
- (and some transmit rate messages)
-
- The disk is making some crunch-crunch -style noise. After a long time
- the crunching finally stops.
-
- I have also other similarly behaving 1924-21 disk. It has been formatted
- with different parameters in the past and it used to work. Now it does
- the same at boot time and with dkinfo and but I haven't tried to format
- it yet because I would prefer to save the data first.
-
- What is going from with these disks ? As I have now two disks behaving
- the same way I can hardly believe that it's media fault on both of these
- two disks.
-
- I don't have any other jumpers set on the disk than the scsi-id jumpers.
- I have couple more of 1924-21's that I would like to reformat with
- correct parameters but I'm afraid that they will also start to behave
- like these two. (I am actually trying to get these disks working on
- 630 with PTI PT-SBS430-S fast scsi-2 adapter but it's easier to do the
- testing on IPX. They act similarly on the PTI adapter.)
-
- Any help appriciated!
