  14. I have couple of Micropolis 1924-21 2.4G fast scsi disks connected to
  15. Sun IPX workstation.  I am trying to use the following format.dat entry:

  23. I tried to format it and it started just fine but after quite a long time
  24. it failed.  The same happened for second try.  Then I rebooted the
  25. system and at the boot I now get the following messages:

  27. esp0 at SBus slot 0 0x800000 pri 3
  28. esp0:   Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
  29. sd1 at esp0 target 1 lun 0
  30. esp0:   Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
  31. esp0:   Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
  32. esp0:   Target 1 now Synchronous at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate
  33. sd1: Vendor 'MICROP', product '1924-21MZ1077801', 4096656 512 byte blocks
  34. (ie. several times the transmit rate message)

  36. If I do dkinfo sd1 to the disk, I get several 'Target 1 now Synchronous
  37. at 4.0 mb/s max transmit rate' messages and after some time 'sd1: no
  38. such disk'.

  40. If I try to format the disk I get the following messages:

  42. Formatting...Medium error during mode select
  43. ASC: 0x0   ASCQ: 0x0
  44.  
  45. sd1c:   Error for command 'mode select'
  46. sd1c:   Error Level: Fatal
  47. sd1c:   Sense Key: Media Error
  48. sd1c:   Vendor 'MICROP' error code: 0x22
  49. (and some transmit rate messages)

  51. The disk is making some crunch-crunch -style noise.  After a long time
  52. the crunching finally stops.

  54. I have also other similarly behaving 1924-21 disk.  It has been formatted
  55. with different parameters in the past and it used to work.  Now it does
  56. the same at boot time and with dkinfo and but I haven't tried to format
  57. it yet because I would prefer to save the data first.

  59. What is going from with these disks ?  As I have now two disks behaving
  60. the same way I can hardly believe that it's media fault on both of these
  61. two disks.

  63. I don't have any other jumpers set on the disk than the scsi-id jumpers.
  64. I have couple more of 1924-21's that I would like to reformat with
  65. correct parameters but I'm afraid that they will also start to behave
  66. like these two.  (I am actually trying to get these disks working on
  67. 630 with PTI PT-SBS430-S fast scsi-2 adapter but it's easier to do the
  68. testing on IPX.  They act similarly on the PTI adapter.)
