- Hi! My boss recently asked me to get the system accounting up
- and running on our sun IPC (running SunOS 4.1.1); we don't have many
- users, but he would just like to get an idea of who's using how much,
- and how much we're all using the machine (nad how much it's idle).
-
- I read the section from the admin manual (chapter 8) and it
- looks like the output of monacct is what I want. After checking ito it
- all I find that the accounting has already been going on under my nose
- the whole time! I looked in /var/adm/acct/fiscal and see a bunch of
- monthly reports already, which is nice. But I have a few questions
- about them.
-
- Firstly, how would I set this up to have these reports mailed
- to me and my boss automatically every month when they're generated?
-
- Secondly, it shows 0 CPU time for everyone but root. We may
- not do much work, but we do some! One possible connection, for some
- security reason my predecessor made /etc/utmp read only. Any thoughts?
-
- Thirdly, there are three types of files in the fiscal
- directory, fiscrptNN, cmsNN, and tacctNN (where NN is the month). Only
- the first is readable. What are the other two for?
-
- I would be very interested in hearing how anyone else handles
- accounting. Remember, we are only casually interested.
-
- Thanks!
- Ed
