- Does anyone with experience with both the Sony and Mitsubishi 16-inch Indigo
- monitors have an opinion about the relative quality/reliability of the two?
- The reason I ask is the following:
-
- Within a month of receiving my entry Indigo system, my original Sony monitor
- began (apparently) to arc intermittently: there would be a snapping sound
- coming from somewhere in back, and the entire screen would go momentarily
- blank. Other than this problem, I was quite satisfied with the quality of the
- picture. Naturally, I called the TAC and they were quite prompt about returning
- my call and getting out a "new" monitor to me. (I quote the word "new" because
- it was obviously a used monitor with extensive signs of wear on the base ---
- but that's another topic.)
-
- This second monitor, also a Sony, had two problems from the start: 1). the
- brightness would fluctuate wildly, especially upon power-up (though it never
- quite settled down completely), and 2). the screen image was slightly - but
- noticeably - distorted, with both vertical and horizontal grid lines bowed
- inward toward the center (using the convergence grid Confidence Test). When
- I complained my call was returned not by an engineer, but by someone from
- Logistics. To make a long story short, this person told me that SGI had
- received many customer complaints about the Sony monitors and that they were
- currently being phased out in favor of Mitsubishis. Still, she insisted on
- sending me another Sony monitor as a replacement.
-
- Today my third Sony monitor arrived, and though it doesn't seem to be on its
- last legs, it has the same image distortion problem as my second monitor,
- slightly worse in fact. Maybe I'm being picky, but at a $3500 list price I
- expect better quality than this.
-
- So I ask: is image distortion a "feature" of the older Sony monitors? Do the
- Mitsubishi monitors suffer from this problem also? If the Sonys are being
- phased out, in what way are the Mitsubishis superior? Should I insist on
- being sent one as a replacement or try to live with what I have?
-
- For the record, the manufacture dates on my three monitors, in order from
- original to most recent, are: 3/92, 1/92, and 6/91.
-
- Thanks in advance,
