  11. Anybody out there ? Silence on the list might be the manifestation that
  12. there is a hell lot of work done out there in terms of pen-computing. Might
  13. also reflect the thought that, as Zachman puts it, Pen-Computing is 
  14. braindead.

  16. Fact is that Notepads (Pen Tablets a la NCR, SL, TriGem) have not
  17. *really* generated money. And worse, that (including Momenta) they
  18. have alienated potential customers.

  20. No wonder that everybody's trying to jump on two new bandwagons:
  21. PenTops and PDA's. This time, it might well be a good idea to
  22. think about what customers need and are prepared to spare money
  23. for, instead of playing technogames. I remember well :) the bashing
  24. I got from Momenta last december, when I stated here that..

  26. "...blablabla..but I don't know whos going to buy it [the PenTop]".

  28. It went all the way from John Rizzo over to Momentas chief of european
  29. operations, Juergen Tepper, to a magazine I'm working for as a
  30. freelance. No further comment on that.

  32. So, those still believing in Pen-Computing now turn their attention
  33. to companies like Samsung, Dell, IBM, GRiD, Dauphin, ZDS (PenTops) and
  34. Samsung, EO, Apple, Tandy (PDAs).

  36. Now for the pennyworth:

  38. PenTops are not going to find *any* customers if they don't provide
  39. an alternative pointing mechanism besides the pen. Look for NCR's
  40. FingerMouse as an excellent complementary device.
  41.  
  42. PDAs are worthless if
  43.  
  44.     * they don't provide cursive handwriting recognition
  45.     * they don't slip < 500$, < 1 pound 
  46.     * they don't hook up to available wireless communication means
  47.  
  48. All of this is not going to happen until 1994.
